About Star Alliance
Star Alliance is the world's first and largest global airline alliance. It was launched on 14 May 1997 by five founding carriers - Air Canada, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Thai Airways International and United Airlines - and today brings together 26 member airlines. The network is coordinated by Star Alliance Services GmbH, based in Frankfurt, Germany, and carries the slogan 'Together. Better. Connected.' Between them the members serve more than 1,300 airports in around 195 countries with roughly 19,000 daily departures, giving Star Alliance the broadest route map and the largest combined market share of any alliance.
The passenger benefits are built around a shared two-tier loyalty framework: Star Alliance Silver and Star Alliance Gold. Each member's own frequent-flyer levels map onto these common tiers, so status and the miles you earn on one carrier are recognised across all the others. Gold members receive the most valuable perks, including access to more than 1,000 partner lounges worldwide, priority check-in, priority boarding, priority baggage handling, a higher checked-baggage allowance, priority reservations and airport standby, and preferential seating where it is offered.
For complex trips the alliance sells Round the World and Circle fares that let travellers combine flights across many members on a single itinerary and ticket. Star Alliance has also introduced a Connecting Partner model that lets selected airlines cooperate with the network without full membership, extending its reach still further. The overall aim is a consistent, seamless experience - smooth transfers, reciprocal recognition and a single mileage account - wherever a Star Alliance carrier flies.
